1936 Oil Painting by August Torselff, 43" × 51"

Local Shaker Heights, Ohio pickup only.

A striking large-scale portrait by Danish painter August Tørsleff (1884–1968), dated 1934. The work depicts an elegantly seated woman dressed in deep burgundy, draped in a softly rendered shawl and posed against a nearly black background. Tørsleff’s restrained palette and attention to the sitter’s face and hands give the portrait a wonderful sense of presence—formal, but remarkably intimate.

Tørsleff was a Danish portrait and figure painter active during the first half of the 20th century and is particularly known for his accomplished society portraits. This example is especially impressive for its scale and presentation, housed in a substantial period-style gilt frame with carved foliate corner details, egg-and-dart molding, and a beaded inner border.

The dark ground, rich reds and browns, and warm aged gilt frame make this an incredibly decorative piece in addition to its interest as a signed work by a listed artist. At this size, it has a commanding presence and works beautifully as a statement portrait.
